Keep Up With Us.

The calm. đŸ¤Ģ
â€ĸ
One of the best things about this ocean row is that the seascape is so fluid (literally and metaphorically!). Despite nothing being on the horizon there is constant change. Every second spent looking out to sea, is a second spent looking at something slightly different. The waves constantly transforming, the colors of the sky reflecting in the water, the churned up white water from crashing waves, or as in this picture the guys sent back shows - the almost perfect still. 📸
â€ĸ
Days like these will be quiet too. There isn't much out there that will make a noise, but the ocean constantly lapping, or crashing, against the side of the boat creates a constant backing track to their journey, but when it's completely still all that stops, and whenever the guys stop talking it will be almost perfectly quiet. It can sometimes feel quite eery!
â€ĸ
And perhaps that this is the draw of doing something like this. If they were entering into a 2,800 mile car race, every competitor would see the same tarmac, the same road signs, and the same buildings whizzing by. But here, every single person will have their own unique experience. đŸĨ°
â€ĸ
Another good day of progress for the team - KEEP GOING TEAM HPP!! đŸ’ĒđŸ’Ē

Remember, the team are putting themselves through all of this to raise money for the @michaeljfoxorg - ALL donations will be TRIPLE MATCHED, meaning your $25 is worth $100 to the charity! Donate today at https://give.michaeljfox.org/event/2023-human-powered-potential/e468428 (link in bio) 🙏

At the end of another earth day Pete smiles as the sun goes down once again. 😁🌅
â€ĸ
And we say 'earth day', because the way the team are living out here, it's almost like they're having six mini days to every earth day! 🤔
â€ĸ
Sound asleep inside the cabins they'll awake, about 10 minutes before the shift starts to their opposite shift member knocking on the cabin door announcing "TEN MINUUUUTTEEESS!!". When you're awoken by that 6 times a day it can get old, real quick! 😩
â€ĸ
They'll sit up, and come to. They may crack the door open to ask how it's been and what the weather is doing. Depending on the answer they'll make a decision on whether to wear full foul-weather kit, or something lighter...and then start wrestling themselves into that kit, before eventually open the hatch, clipping themselves on to the safety line, and clambering out onto deck. đŸĒĸ
â€ĸ
Their very tired opposite number then clamber back into the cabin, and 2 hours of rowing begins. Eventually they'll then get to do their own "TEN MINUUUUTTEEESS!!" shout, before watching the hatch give birth to their somewhat refreshed opposite number, and returning to the cabin themselves. 🔁
â€ĸ
Once they're in the cabin, despite only having 2 hours to get sleep, they can't go to sleep straight away. They'll need to undress, clean the salt water off themselves so it doesn't dry into salt crystals. They'll need to cook, eat, sort out any navigational stuff, and potentially send some imagery back for us, they also may need to have their regular check in with the safety team. And THEN they can get some sleep (normally only about 90 minutes). ⏲ī¸
â€ĸ
And that's a mini-day aboard the boat - 6 of them in a regular earth day. So if it takes them 45 days to cross, it'll feel longer because it's been 270 mini days! đŸ¤¯

This race is shaping up to be really strange! đŸ˜ŗ
â€ĸ
Currently left in the race are four teams of four, one team of three, and three teams of two. But, with the exception of United Row, the less rowers on the boat, the further up the field they are! 🤷‍♂ī¸
â€ĸ
The pairs are leading, the trio is in third, and the fours are behind the trio! đŸ˜¯
â€ĸ
So what's going on?! 🤔
â€ĸ
Unusually, there are only three types of boat in this race, and all of them are made by @rannochadventure
 - The R45 - the largest boat in the field; the trio team and all the fours are using this one, including HPP đŸšŖ
 - The R25 - the smallest boat in the fleet, all but one of the pairs teams are using this. Some R25s are fibreglass, some are carbon đŸĒļ
 - The RX25 - the latest pairs boat design by Rannoch, there is just one of these in the race, it's full carbon and Wild Waves are using it đŸ‘¯â€â™€ī¸
â€ĸ
The larger boats are a heavier construction, just because they're bigger and require more materials to build. But the majority of the weight of these boats, is the kit that's on it - and so on a fours boat not only do you have twice the weight of the people onboard, but a lot more heavy kit too. ⚖ī¸
â€ĸ
On a calm day, the extra people on the bigger boats can outpace a pair (if their strength and timing is equal), despite the weight disadvantage - but up until recently they've been battling through some huge, and incredibly messy seas. Not only does that mean that playing the conditions tactically is crucial, but often a lighter pairs boat can make better progress through those messy conditions. 🌊
â€ĸ
Now we've got lighter winds, which are turning to help everyone along, and with such a tight pack it'll be fascinating to see if the current positions will stay the same, or if the fours will now come in to their own! 🤩

Despite the hardships...this really is a beautiful place to be. đŸĨ°
â€ĸ
This is civil dusk: The sun has said goodnight for another day and dipped below the horizon. It's parting gift is an almost ethereal glow in every direction, looking almost heavenly. 🌟
â€ĸ
Living out here, being on deck for almost every hour of their waking life, the guys will notice things they may never have noticed before....the moon for instance: In this video, it's position is fairly high in the sky, but a lunar day is about 50 minutes longer than a solar day, so tomorrow, at the same time, it'll be in a different position. On some nights the moon will only be visible for a short while, some nights it will not rise at all. 🌚
â€ĸ
And the twilight zone: This twilight is civil dusk, once the sun drops beyond 6 degrees below the horizon it'll become nautical dusk, then below 12 degrees it becomes astronomical dusk, and finally at 18 degrees...the night. 🌉
â€ĸ
These are things that we often aren't aware of on land, or it doesn't make any difference. But while the guys are sat aboard 'American Spirit', they're facing the same way, just endlessly watching, and absorbing the earth and the universe above...all these things are important to them. 🌌
â€ĸ
At night, a full moon with no clouds, means being able to see really far, no moon and no clouds, means INCREDIBLE celestial displays with the milky way streaking across the night sky and the shooting stars lighting up the night, no moon and thick clouds at night means not being able to even see the end of their oars, patchy clouds in the morning can create phenomenal light displays when the sun rises. 🌅
â€ĸ
And as they pull on their oars, and absorb all this difference...it's a wonderous and magical place to be. 💖

For our newer followers, this is Pat. 🙋‍♂ī¸
â€ĸ
Pat is 25% of the the crew of rowers, but he also suffers with Parkinson's. Parkinson's occurs when brain cells that make dopamine, a chemical that coordinates movement, stop working or die.
â€ĸ
Whilst it is characterised by slow movement, tremors, stiffness and balance issues, it affects a vast number of aspects of life. So receiving a Parkinson's diagnosis, is an extraordinarily tough thing to hear. It is lifelong, and at the moment, there is no cure.
â€ĸ
Now, Pat would not want to be seen, and shouldn't be seen, as the charity aspect of this row - he has trained incredibly hard and is a phenomenally strong and irreplaceable asset to this crew, regardless of any diagnosis.
â€ĸ
But we can't help but be awed by his strength to do what he is doing. A diagnosis is incredibly challenging...thankfully most sufferers find acceptance and quality of life after the initial adjustment period....but few people (with or without Parkinson's) find the strength to take on something as breath-taking as what Pat is doing with his three friends. 💙
â€ĸ
Rowing across the Pacific Ocean, unsupported, with the aim to raise a mind-blowing $28 million dollars. All of which will be in researchers hands within 30 days. All of which is to find a cure. 🧑‍đŸ”Ŧ
